The older I get, the more I realize how little I know. How is that possible when I was so smart as a young man?

I truly believe we learn about the present and the future by studying the past and applying it. Imagine how many errors countries would make if the leaders understood history?

I like to read about a place or events before visiting. Recent experiences are visiting the Normandy beaches from D-Day. Reading the Ambrose book on the subject made everything we saw more impressive and understandable. Reading a bio of Bonaparte helped explain some of the nuances in the Paris area. Especially impactful was the book “Eiffel’s Tower” read before visiting this awesome place. When you know what went into the building of this world icon, you can better appreciate going up to the top on a windy day.

I am now reading books on the Crusades and Haiti as research for my next novel.
